Bible Study and the Miraculous

If you have not already read my blog post “How to Start Your Study of the Bible,” I suggest you begin there.  As you work your way through the Bible the most important aspect of your study will be the teachers you select to travel this road with you.  I have three fantastic teachers to share with you who will help confirm the miraculous nature of God and the Bible.  The miraculous is perhaps the biggest stumbling block for unbelievers.  It’s important that you have a clear understanding of the miraculous so that you can better share your faith with others.

I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be Atheist

The most important aspect of your Bible study is your firm belief that you are indeed reading the Word of God.  Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek have written a detailed explanation of why we should accept the miraculous nature of God and His creation.  In that same vein, they go on to establish the deity of Jesus and our promise of salvation through His death and resurrection.  Without question, this book will put you on firm and solid ground in regards to your understanding of the miraculous nature of your faith.

The Case for Miracles

There are countless accounts of extraordinary miracles performed throughout the Bible.  These kinds of amazing events, often performed on demand, seem to have vanished from existence.  Some believe miracles of God are still being performed today and some do not.  Investigative reporter and theologian Lee Strobel has written this book to uncover the truth about miracles in our world today.  He was able to uncover many well-documented accounts of healings and other extraordinary events that simply can’t be explained by a term other than miraculous.  After reading this book, it will be difficult to not believe God is still performing miracles every day.

To Heaven and Back

Stories of people dying and coming back to life after visiting heaven are not all that uncommon.  Some can be immediately discounted as fantasy or vivid dreams deemed to be real.  Others are more difficult to dismiss.  Doctor Mary Neal’s account of dying in a drowning accident and visiting heaven, before being directed by heavenly beings to return to her earthly body, is remarkably compelling.  Doctor Neal’s credentials as a respected orthopedic surgeon give her a higher level of credibility.  Her scientific training does not allow her to haphazardly accept the miraculous.  This is an inspiring and enriching account of what I believe to be an honest encounter with God.

God’s Miracles are Authentic

The miraculous nature of God is essential to our faith.  The awesome complexity of His creation is vivid testimony to His miraculous powers.  We don’t need to look any farther than our own bodies to see the miraculous.  Our hearts pump and are lungs expand and contract without effort all day every day.  That is a miracle.  Our brains function with extraordinary clarity leading to all the achievements of man.  That is a miracle.  Our hands properly trained can perform surgery, play piano, and craft a beautiful sculpture.  That is a miracle.  Miracles are all around us and the author of them all is God.

“He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.”  Job 5:9 (NIV)
