In the book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul offers five easy steps we should all consider in our walk with Jesus. These gentle reminders will help us stay on track and tidy up any missteps we might be taking. Paul starts by reminding us, that as followers of Jesus we are a new creation. As we follow the teachings of Jesus, our lives should be transformed into a glorious new existence.
“Be made new in the attitude of your minds; and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” Ephesians 4:23-24
One of the most important changes we need to make is to step away from any form of deception. As members of the body of Christ, we all need be truthful with one another. This not only includes eliminating obvious falsehoods, but also eliminating the practice of hiding important information. Deception through omission should be avoided.
“Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” Ephesians 4:25
Next, Paul warns us to take control over our anger. We are all victims of the enemy’s schemes and anger is one of his most frequently used weapons. If we allow anger to control our actions we are playing into the enemy’s hand. Every effort should be made to resolve conflict before it can grow into something uncontrollable.
“Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” Ephesians 4:26-27
In this same vein, we need to eliminate harsh language that only serves to emotionally injure those around us. When we are supportive rather than confrontational and critical, we elevate our connection to others. We should make every effort to extinguish negative thoughts and thereby assure our interactions will be positive.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up” Ephesians 4:29
Finally, we are encouraged to conquer our enemies with love. When we approach all situations with love in our heart, it’s impossible to take on any negative attitudes. Our approach needs to be one of understanding, patience, self-control, and honesty – filled with the peaceful spirit that God provides.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” Ephesians 4:31
These five cautious steps will guide us along a path that strengthens our walk with Jesus. Every interaction we have throughout our day is an opportunity to let the light of Jesus shine. By following this simple to understand advice, we will be displaying the truth and love that fills our hearts as Christians.
